Contrology is the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit. -Joseph H. Pilates

The pilates method, which he called “Contrology”, was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century. After decades of scientific study, experimentation and research he merged his knowledge into carefully designed exercises in order to promote a healthy balance of body and mind. Regardless of one’s fitness level everyone can benefit from his method, which after his passing, was simply called pilates.

When practicing pilates we focus on a strong core, yet always keeping in mind that the body can only be in balance when developed uniformly. So during a session, whether it is mat work or working with small props and especially for pilates designed apparatus,  we will always address all muscle groups. Besides being a full body workout, pilates is also used as injury prevention and can equally be helpful as a form of rehabilitation after an injury.

The dancers, who were amongst his first students when he opened his studio with his wife Clara in New York, recognised the benefits of the work and the method spread quickly amongst the dance community. On my way to becoming a professional dancer, I couldn’t help but come across pilates myself and feel what they probably felt. As pilates forces you to slow down and focus on the smallest details of a movement, it gives you the possibility to find your way of moving most efficiently in every single moment. Therefor getting the most effect with the smallest effort, using your breath in order to find an organic flow. You will leave the class energised, you will feel every single muscle in your body without over exhausting yourself. Over time you will find that your posture is improving, not only because of your muscles becoming stronger but your awareness changing and helping you maintain healthy habits. And yes, if you stay patient and keep up the good work, you will also get snatched ; ) but that’s just a nice side effect of the countless benefits of practicing pilates.

I always knew I would teach the method myself someday because I had the strong desire to share all my knowledge of the human body and the way it moves. It took me years to find the right education for myself. I chose BASI Pilates® because it gave me the frame that I needed in order to bring a structure into that catalogue of endless movement possibilities. BASI® (Body Arts and Science International) preserves the classical repertoire and the essence of Joseph H. Pilates’ philosophy while supplementing it with the contemporary experience and scientific knowledge and that simply spoke to me.

After dancing for as long as I can remember, I found so much joy in spreading my love and passion for movement. So whoever you are, whatever your background or fitness level is, come and do your hundreds* with me!
